The island of Zakynthos is located in the Ionian Sea, west of the Greek peninsula, the 3rd largest island in the Ionian Sea, with a population of 40,000. The island’s nickname is Levante’s flower, so named by the Venetians, who were shapers of the island’s history in the 1500s and 1700s.
Attractions include the Church of Kato Gerakari, the Catholic Church of St. Mark, the bust of Ugo Foscolo, an Italian writer, revolutionary and poet, originally named Niccolò Foscolo. Also on the shores of Sekania, in Laganas Bay, is the Cultural Center on Dionysios Solomos Square. Of particular note is the sea turtle of local nature, which also lives on the island.
Regarding the city of Zakynthos, it is also worth noting that in addition to the official name Zakynthos, it is also called Chora (i.e. the city), a common name in Greece when the name of the island is the same as the name of the capital. It has a population of nearly 17,000. Closely related to the city, and at the same time to the island, is the name of Dionysios, an 16th-century archbishop after whom a church was named: the Church of Agios Dionysios. Composer Pavlov Carrer, the aforementioned poet Ugo Foscolo, the poet Andreas Kalvos, and the poet Dionysios Solomos, after whom the island’s airport was eventually named. His statue can also be found in the city, commemorating the poet.
It is also worth visiting the Navagio coast, to the northwest, which is surrounded by high cliffs and is therefore only accessible by boat. In the southern part of the island is Keri, a small mountain village with a lighthouse.
